BBQ Chicken Drumsticks Recipe

Chicken drumsticks are perfect for barbecuing, offering juicy meat with a crispy, flavorful coating. This simple recipe includes a delicious BBQ marinade and a foolproof method for perfectly cooked drumsticks every time.

Ingredients

For the Marinade:

  • 12 chicken drumsticks
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 tbsp barbecue sauce (your favorite brand)
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar (or white vinegar)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • ½ tsp chili powder (optional, for heat)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method

1. Prepare the Marinade

  1. In a large bowl, mix together olive oil, barbecue sauce, honey, soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, smoked paprika, cumin, chili powder (if using), salt, and pepper.
  2. Add the chicken drumsticks to the bowl and toss to coat evenly in the marinade.
  3. Cover and marinate in the fridge for at least 2 hours, or ideally overnight for maximum flavor.

2. Prepare the BBQ or Oven

  1. Preheat your barbecue to medium heat (around 180–200°C).
    • If using an oven: Preheat to 200°C (180°C fan).

3. Cook the Drumsticks

  1. On the BBQ:
    • Place the drumsticks on the grill and cook for 30–35 minutes, turning every 5–7 minutes and basting with the leftover marinade. Ensure the drumsticks reach an internal temperature of 74°C.
  2. In the Oven:
    • Arrange the drumsticks on a lined baking tray and roast for 30–35 minutes, turning halfway through and basting with the leftover marinade. For a charred effect, finish under the grill for 2–3 minutes.

4. Serve

  • Serve the drumsticks hot, with a side of coleslaw, potato wedges, or a fresh green salad.
  • Add extra barbecue sauce on the side for dipping.

Chef’s Tips

  • To prevent sticking on the BBQ, lightly oil the grill grates before cooking.
  • For extra smoky flavor, add soaked wood chips to your barbecue coals or grill.

This BBQ recipe delivers juicy, tender chicken drumsticks with a sweet and smoky glaze, making them a hit at any gathering or casual dinner. Enjoy!
